Tams News, 2nd Edition

July 23, 2008

Hey Tams Fans! It's been a busy busy summer so far for the group. They've been from Virginia to Florida and everywhere in between (at least it seems like it)! That's OK though - ya'll know they love they're fans, and wouldn't be doing ANYTHING else!

OK, so in the last newsletter, I asked if anyone had memories of The Tams that they'd like to share. I'm sorry I have had some major problems with my computer (read=VIRUS!!!) which took a while to fix. I'm STILL trying to get things straightened out. Anyway, I'm slowly coming back across those emails. If you've sent me something, feel free to resend (TheTams@Comcast.net). Here are a couple of Tams Memories...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This one is from Ms. Alice Pritchett:
As a teen in school there was nothing like MOTOWN to me. When I heard the Tams I just feel in love with the music, see back then you mainly had just your records or a radio, so I didn't ever get to see the original group. But I was able to see the Tams for my 52nd birthday in January 2008. The guys were soooo nice I got pictures of me with most of them except "Red". Mr. Charles is still soooooo suave and gentle. I hope the group will always have the Respected name as they have had for years. Whatever race we loved the Tams. My favorite is BE Young BE Foolish but BE Happy. Go Mr. Charles! "Red" please follow in their great footsteps.
This next one is from Mr. Claude Butler:
MY all time favorite band ever! I have so many lovely and outstanding memories with the Tams it brings tears to my eye when I think about them.
These are tears of joy, laughter and sorrow when a young person is growingup and in love.
In the sixties Mr. Joe Pope would every now and again give me the mike to sing along with the Mighty Tams. I was so proud
And thankful for that. This was on the old folly beach fishing pier where we used to dance the Tams, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, Everly Brothers, and the list goes on. But none other had such an effect on the crowd and public like the Tams. I just seem like that everything that happened in ones life was always surrounded by the songs of the Tams. I don't know of any band that is so truly loved more than the Tams. Absolute
Family.
The Tams Now and forever and thank you all for the Memories you given not only me but thousands of others.
I know I will never hear from any of you, but just to let you know I support you guys Heart, Body, and Soul.
I will be see you again and again.
A True fan..
Claude W. Butler
This memory is my own. :)
I grew up listening to Beach Music, especially The Tams and The Drifters. My parents and Aunt Martha (rest her soul) had these on records. When I was a little girl, they would put a record on and give us shag lessons. I was just as hopeless then as I am now! Anyway, we made sure to listen to Dan E. Lockamey (who is still around, by the way) every Saturday so we could hear our Beach Music. My parents would tell us how they would always go see The Tams, and other great groups, at The Coachmen in Bennettsville, SC when they were young. Now fast forward several years to 1999. I was going to school in Clemson. I heard about The Tams coming to perform at Explorers. I was so excited!! I tried to brush up on my shagging, but shortly gave THAT up! I remember getting out of the car, and as I began walking up the sidewalk, I saw the CUTEST little guy standing there. I didn't know then who he was, but I told my friend I'd be meeting him that night! And I did. He turned out to be Little Redd - the Fastest Feet in the South!! I wanted to meet him, so I made friends with the guy selling merchandise (ya'll know him as Coach) and found out everything I could about him. Now, everybody knows how friendly they are, so it wasn't hard for me to get a chance to talk to him. We talked for a long time and exchanged numbers. We've been together ever since. Fast forward again to 2008. Little Redd and I have three beautiful children who think it is funny that mommy was barely walking when daddy started singing on stage. Hehehehe. I just wanted to share my favorite Tams memory. Thanks for 'listening'! :)
